Collaborating in Kenya

While I was in Nairobi I had the privilege of connecting with an amazing artist named Mary. She is a painter and a designer, of all sorts. I even had a glimpse into her sketchbook that is filled with jewelry and fashion ideas aplenty!

We connected to brainstorm on a new ideas for Jacaranda Creations (which I wrote about on this post a little while back.) The idea was to have Mary paint on fabric, and then use that fabric for various new designs like pillow covers and wall hangings.

Once she had painted a lovely tree, Mary (after only knowing me for less than a day!) suggested that I could add some leaves to it, in fabric. African fabric. (Have I told you how much I adore brightly colored patterned African fabrics?? I probably have. And, you know how I feel about collaging...) Obviously, this girl is a kindred spirit of mine. No question there.

The next day I, happily, glued fabric leaves to her beautiful painting. We talked about the possibility of attaching it to dried banana leaf and using it as a wall hanging. I'm not sure what the end product will be, since I had to leave not long after working on it, but I felt so overwhelmingly grateful to have had an opportunity to share a day - and an art project - with such a dear, talented lady!

I hope that we shall collaborate again sometime!

I have started doing something that I think needs to become a tradition: when going through a long and challenging week, make a list of the (little) things that are (deeply) happy. This week, it would be things like:

1. coffee. precious coffee.
2. pink sunrises and morning mist.
3. good hair days. I've had several.
4. frosted birthday cookies and margaritas. yes, on the same day.
5. get-up-and-dance-on-your-desk-at-work types of music.

6. amazing security envelope patterns.
7. kangaroos made of pears and churches made of legos.

8. miniature daffodils. blooming in February.
9. honest conversations and the deepening of friendships.

Perhaps this week hasn't been so bad after all. However, I am still quite (very) glad it's the weekend.

Since today is Pancake Day in the UK, I thought I'd share with you a thrifted treasure that I use whenever I make pancakes at home: this vintage measuring glass.

It is usually used in conjunction with my favorite yellow ceramic mixing bowl, which is not actually thrifted, but is definitely a treasure nontheless.

Maasai Red

That's what Jack, the artist who created this necklace, called this color. I think my crush on that particular color began the moment I spotted it, standing on a Nairobi street, peeking into his colorful, little shop.

Jack is one of the artisans that my friends at Red Earth Trading Co. work with. While we were in Kenya, Evan and Katy (brilliant designers and lovely friends of mine....) presented him with some of their latest pieces to create. I feel privileged to have gotten a preview of the fun, new spring goodies they are working on. You are going to want to keep an eye on their website, too, so that you can order some beautiful African beads to wear around YOUR neck.

It's not exactly thrifted, but this magenta vintage postcard that I purchased at a Parisian flea market just seemed like the perfect treasure to share with you today.

The littlest things, whether found on an overseas adventure or in the daily routine of life, are often times the best things of all.

On that note...hope your Valentine's Day has been just perfect in every sweet, little way.

It seems like a good day to share with you some hearts around my home that make me quite happy. You, of course, know that frosted sugar cookie hearts fall into that category. (especially when they are yellow..)

So does this little wooden souvenir I purchased in London...

..and artwork from one of the precious little children at the Home Again orphanage in Uganda..

....this vintage-y looking heart, which usually hangs on a cabinet doorknob...

..and last, but certainly not least, my yellow pendant heart necklace. I wore it yesterday for Valentine's eve and I may or may not be wearing it again today.

sprinkles, sugars and such

Minus a few frosting color mishaps (Big Bird yellow wasn't really the look I was going for. Silly frosting paste.) Valentine cookie event 2012 went quite well.

In the end all turned out happy, bright, turquoise, sunny yellow, pink, white and red. Which is exactly how I planned it.

Some of my favorites were the layered ones with little "xo" cookies on top of the biggest hearts. I still haven't eaten those yet, because I want to just look at their cuteness a little bit longer.

Oh, and, because it matters: I wore my valentine socks that day, too.

Valentine's weekend

It's Valentine's weekend, which means (drum roll...) it is time for: the annual making of the frosted, sprinkled, heart-shaped sugar cookies. It's going to be a good weekend.

It's got me reminiscing a bit, too, about this fun photo shoot I collaborated on with my friend, Ian, last year. I loved the photo (above) he took of my cookie creations.

Can't wait to see how the cookies turn out THIS year. Still debating whether I'm going to go with traditional or unconventional colors...hmmm.

Nairobi Color

My first few days in Nairobi last month were spent with this cute bundle of spunk and her family. Her name is Brayden and her mom, Brenda, is the heart and vision behind Jacaranda Creations. Jacaranda is an organization that helps hardworking women living in Kenyan slums to create, and sell, all kinds of beautiful products through sewing and crafting. I can tell you this: these opportunities are changing their lives. I saw it, firsthand.

A few of my favorite things the women make are the pieces of clothing, like the dress Brayden is modeling (so well) above and these colorful skirts.

Another thing that immediately caught my eye were these amazing bowls made out of fabric covered roped. (I got to see one in the process of being made - so very fun!)

Plans are in the works to develop an online store for Jacaranda purchases outside of Kenya, but in the meantime, you can find them here on Facebook. Following them there will also allow you a glimpse into some of the stories behind the ladies who are creating, which is the best part of all.

You'll also hear some more stories from Jacaranda here on my blog, too, this spring and summer. There is going to be a fun connection between them and my new hair accessory line. Can't wait to share it all with you! I love happy, colorful and purposeful things.

More. And Less.

Spending the first month of a new year overseas, in several different cultures, has a way of reshaping your perspective on all of the other months ahead. You realize the things that truly matter and what does not. Since I got back to the states a couple of weeks ago, I have been thinking about a lot of changes that need to made in my life. Things, big and small, that I want less of and things I desperately want (& need) more of. Here are a few of the things on my heart:

Less "Oh well"s and more "What if?"s.

Less answers and more questions. (yes.)

Less anxiety and more peace. (it's a choice.)

I would like more of all of these things too:

prolonged sunset watching & unhurried stargazing.
face to face conversations with no clock in sight.
writing, sketching, dreaming & creating. just because.
after dinner music & before bed book reading.
sunday afternoons in parks.
silliness. a whole lot more of the silly and lighthearted.

(p.s. - the above photo was a self portrait I took in Nairobi, Kenya. I was sitting in the sunshine. Doing absolutely nothing. Pretty sure I need more of that this year too.)

It's going to be a good (& new) year.

With all of this spring-like weather here in Nashville, I've been wearing a lot of yellow. Actually, I wear yellow no matter the weather, but anyway...here's one (of the many) thrifted yellow sweaters I own.

I call this one "lemon cream sorbet."

African Daisy Headbands

Let's be honest: it's not hard to get inspired with a pile of fabrics that looks like this one. I was in heaven with all of the bright colors and fun patterns available to work with in the workshop at Village Art in Uganda. I quickly assembled some African daisies, and then, Grace

& Maggie (below) made some solid colored headbands to attach them to.

After that, they hand sewed it all together.

I think they turned out quite well. There were lots of smiles all around as the girls ran to the closest (and biggest) mirrors to see the results of their creating.

I hear that they have been making some more since I left, too. Can't wait to see what they've been up to....

Village Art, Uganda

As I mentioned yesterday, one of the projects I was privileged to be involved in while in Uganda, was helping with an endeavor called Village Art. As you can see on their sign above, they are a part of Bringing Hope to the Family, an affiliate of Global Support Mission.

Village Art is a business on the main street in Kaihura that includes a hair salon, a bridal boutique (where wedding dresses and accessories are rented out) a craft shop, and a workshop, where the girls create the crafts to sell.

The hair salon was being finished up while I was in town, so that involved some manicure/pedicure training, painting, shelf building, shelf painting, shelf stocking and, at the end of it all...a Grand Opening! It was a lot of fun to be involved in and so wonderful to see a new, bright & happy place where people of the village are able to come and enjoy such great services..and also, potentially, be employed at.

As you may have already guessed (I'm not hard to figure out..) the craft workshop was one of my favorite places to hang out in Kaihura.

I loved meeting and working with these sweet girls and, on Monday, I will be showing you what we created together. It was one of my favorite days on my journey.

The Sassers

One of my favorite parts of being in Uganda was getting to know the amazing Sasser family. I am so impressed by Chris and Katie, who have worked with Global Support Mission in Kaihura for three years now. To try to explain to you ALL that they do would be nigh unto impossible, but here's a little glimpse, they: teach leadership classes, cart volunteers (such as myself) around, lead the volunteer teams, love on the orphans at Home Again, paint, paint, paint, build things, offer priceless friendship and counseling to those in the village, help design & create crafts, got a local hair salon up and running, play beautiful (after dinner) music, that I was privileged to hear...and (on top of all of that +much, much more..) they are incredible parents to two of the coolest boys I know: Logan

and Kolby.

Katie, also happens to be a gifted artist. I'm in love with this recycled soda bottle cap mosaic she created on her house in the village.

So, so cool! She does beautiful paintings, as well. Be sure to look her up on Facebook to see her colorful and unforgettable portfolio. Supporting her and her artwork will, in turn, support all of the amazing, life-giving things that are happening in the village.

One of the things I had the joy of helping out with, while in Uganda, is a local endeavor called Village Art. Katie has been a central person is getting it off the ground, not to mention designing (and painting) their fun logo.

Coming up tomorrow, I will tell you all about what exactly Village Art is...and the part I was able to play in it while I was there. It makes my heart entirely happy.

Kind strangers on trains. Cozy, out of the way coffee shops. Rainy nights watching movies & drinking tea. Rainy days in bookstores. Stunningly beautiful landmarks at dusk.Very well-dressed sophisticated men (a girl can't help but notice.) The Thames at night. Afternoon art museum browsing. Warm, inviting pubs filled with laughter and conversation. Being the only American at a cheery, sunlit birthday brunch....I absolutely loved London. Every bit of it.

I would go back in a heartbeat and, if I did, would love to (again) spend time with this creative, sweet lady.

I'm so thankful to her for showing me her beautiful city - including favorite bridges, bookstores and coffee shops. She is a girl after my own heart..and you should get to know her. She has a wonderful blog and website for her photography. Be sure to check them out!

Tomorrow, I will introduce you to some other inspiring friends I spent time with on my journey overseas. Next stop: Uganda.

My suitcase is unpacked and now I am attempting to unpack all of the wonderful memories too. Starting on Monday I will be sharing with you some of the beautiful and inspiring people, places and things I encountered on my travels to England, Uganda and Kenya. I am definitely overwhelmed by all of the talented, hard-working, incredible artisans and artists I had the privilege to meet while I was gone.

Huge thanks to my dear friend, Kelli, for carrying on the Tuesday tradition of Thrifted Treasures while I was overseas. Just as I suspected, she did a superb job and I loved each and every piece that she shared with us. Hope you did too!

Hi everyone! Kelli here. Aimee is returning from Africa, so what better occasion to feature my favorite necklace? It wouldn't surprise me if Aimee saw a lion or two during her travels, so in her adventurous honor, I dedicate this final guest post to her with my "mane" fashion staple... (get it?)

I totally scored at the thrift store several years ago with this find! I was initially attracted to the wood, gold and pewter color combination, but almost passed on it because of the unferocious-looking cat in the middle... Nowadays, I'd be "lion" if I said I didn't find him to be kind of cool.

Hey all! Kelli here. I'm pretty excited about this week's Thrifted Treasure. It's one of my favorites and perhaps you will be a little "green" with envy once you see it...

or maybe a little greenish/ chartreuse-ish with envy...

This is my favorite Fall jacket, which, thankfully, I've been able to wear through this warm winter. I never feel too fancy nor too casual in it, it keeps me nice and warm and it always looks good with my knee-high boots. Hey... you're starting to look a little chartreuse there, my friend. ;)

Happy Tuesday, everyone! Kelli here. I'm getting pretty excited to hear about Aimee's amazing adventures abroad! (Wow... say that 10 times fast.) In the meantime, I'm happily holding down the Thrifted Treasure fort.

Speaking of forts, let me show you something that I decorate mine with! (Nice transition, huh? I know... I'm super smooth.)

I picked up this beautiful milk glass vase at one of my favorite thrift stores. It is pretty perfect for a simple, clean look.

These fresh green mums look elegant without looking too Spring-y for the winter time, but it is beautiful with a bouquet of brightly colored flowers as well. Either way, it adds some cheer to my fort any time of the year.

(FYI: I don't really call my house a "fort." I was tying it all together... See? Super smooth.)

Hi, everyone! Kelli here. Happy New Year to you!

I've got big plans for this year, and those plans will require much sitting at my craft table, dreaming up ideas and putting them together. For all of these rigorous hours I'll be putting in, I'm going to need a very special tool to help me accomplish my creative tasks. I'm going to need this:

What is it? Great question! I'm not entirely sure, but I have a pretty good idea.

I am using it as a neat little coffee warmer. It's perfect to get me through a brainstorming session without having to break for a coffee warm-up. The fact that I don't know EXACTLY what it is makes me feel like I could, metaphorically, be combing my hair with a fork like Ariel did with her "dinglehopper" in The Little Mermaid. Despite this, I rather like the idea of starting my 2012 a bit like Ariel. After all, she was a big dreamer, wasn't she? I wonder if mermaids drink coffee?

Hi everbody! Kelli here. While Aimee is off expanding her cultural horizons, I will be taking over Thrifted Treasures and soon after that... the world! (Muah ha ha!)

I kid, I kid... But if I WERE to gain world domination, I would surely need a throne to sit upon. Good thing I have one...

This lovely yellow chair was calling my name at the thrift store last summer and I dared not ignore it. And though it has served me well as a seat for my craft table until this point, I am graduating it to the title of "Reading Chair" this weekend. With a couple of pillows, I think it will be the perfect place to dig in to my latest book...

...and to practice being ruler of the free world. ;)

I am getting ready to grab my bags and leave my little house, with the yellow door, in Tennessee. By the time I return, the last week of January, I will have visited several states and three different countries.

One of those countries, Kenya, is where this banana leaf nativity was created. It is one of my most treasured Christmas decorations. Ten years have passed since the last time I was in Kenya and I can not wait to spend time, once again, with the beautiful people who live there.

When I return to the states I hope to have plenty of fresh inspiration, lots and lots of new design ideas and...many new, colorful scraps of fabric!

This year has certainly been full of good things and dreams come true, but I have a feeling 2012 is going to be even better....

My Deepest Thanks

A wedding, multiple photo shoots, Open Studio events, CREMA Christmas, crafting, designing, building, connecting, shopping, dreaming, planning, gluing, lots of gluing...this year has been FULL. I could not have accomplished half of what I did without the help of my intern - and, more importantly, dear friend, Kelli. I am so thankful for the ideas, color, support and joy she brought into my life.. and studio.. this year!

She definitely has a bright and sunny future ahead of her and I can't wait to see what she will be creating in the years to come. One of the (many!) things I love about her is how we can go from having deep, serious, conversations about things weighing on our hearts... to being completely, and utterly, ridiculous and silly. The People Loving Nashville Christmas party last week afforded us a golden opportunity to go the silly route...thought I'd share some of my favorite photo booth shots from that night.

Oh, and some most happy news: Kelli has agreed to finish out her internship by taking on Thrifted Treasures each week while I am overseas. I will be, alongside you, eagerly anticipating all of the lovely finds she will be sharing with us in the month ahead.

Thank you, Kelli, for everything you have done this year..but, most of all, thank you for just being YOU. Happy Christmas...and a joy-filled New Year to you, my dear!

A First

One of the things I was commissioned to do this holiday season was to create a "baby's first Christmas" ornament. I had so much fun designing it and working with felt, fabric, stamps and paint.

Oh, and, the finishing touch? a golden bell and some little red jingle bells, for sweet Carabelle.

I enjoyed making it so much, that maybe (maybe?) I will even have some ornaments up in my Etsy shop next year. We'll see...

The last time I was in Africa was January of 2009...and, THIS January: I get to go back. Not just to Uganda, but to Kenya also. I am sure this little dear has grown up quite a bit since I left...and I can't wait to laugh with her once again.

I've been busy over the past few weeks creating custom art pieces and new designs (I'll show you one fun thing tomorrow) in exchange for donations to my trip. I will be working with some wonderful friends there from Global Support Mission - check out their website here.

Also, I still have some artwork for sale (photos here on my Facebook page.) If you are interested in purchasing any pieces, all of the proceeds will go towards helping me make this trip. I am so humbled by and grateful for all of the kind people who have been supporting me in this adventure.

I'm already looking forward to telling you all about it upon my return. But, first...Christmas. Can you believe it's THIS week? I have some fun & festive holiday posts ahead for you in the next few days....stay tuned!

The Winner is...

This past Saturday was that day of the year in Nashville when drinking the best coffee in town and buying handmade good from local artists helped to feed and clothe those in need. In other words, it was my favorite day of the season: CREMA Christmas! We raised around $800 for People Loving Nashville and Safe Haven. I can assure you, it is money that will be well spent to help the homeless here in our city.

Thank you so, so much to all who stopped by that day. I loved seeing all of your faces and having a chance to wish you, in person, a happy holiday season.

Also, thank you, to all of the kind folks who stopped by and purchased my headbands and hair flowers. There were lots of you! I am overwhelmed - and grateful - to think of my little colorful creations under so many Christmas trees this year. Smile.

Yes, CREMA Christmas has become my favorite Nashville Christmas tradition. Let's do it again next year, shall we?

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year (again!)

I have felt a bit like a busy elf, getting ready for CREMA Christmas, this week. Glue, felt, fabric, shiny metals and colorful collages...all coming together for Saturday.

The best part about it all? We get to help people. Lots of people. People who need the basic things in life that we take for granted every day. Things like food, clothing and... friendship.

Each and every Monday night my heart overflows with thankfulness that I have the privilege to serve the homeless here in our city with People Loving Nashville. They truly are friends that I look forward to seeing, and catching up with, every week. Last year, at this event, we were able to raise $2000 for People Loving Nashville and Safe Haven. Countless lives were touched by your generosity - and THAT is what makes this time of year so wonderful.

I have been so inspired by the way some of my friends have been wearing their custom designed hair flowers (like Annie, above, rockin' her autumn-toned daisy!) that it has me wanting to see more. So, here's the deal: if you own one of my hair accessories, headbands and/or hair flowers, I want to see how YOU wear it. Just as I planned...

To follow up on Friday's post (because, no doubt, you've been wondering...)

1. Pretty, live music: listened to (Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Debussy on piano.)
2. Evergreen scent: in the living room (a cute, little tabletop tree, pictured below.)

3. Fire in the fireplace: enjoyed (first one of the season, it crackled and sparked perfectly.)

Weekend Plans

I have a bit of custom design work to do this weekend, but in addition to that I plan to:

1. listen to pretty, live music
2. fill my living room with the scent of evergreen
3. light candles and watch Christmas movies
4. sit by the fireplace
5. drink chocolate-y hot beverages

When Monday rolls around I will have a little, special, fun thing to tell you all about. It could involve YOU. It could. Potentially. You'll see!

Embroidery Hoop Wreaths

Well, I do not actually embroider, but I sure do love embroidery hoops. They are so versatile..so many possibilities! Today I was thinking of cute, bright, fun things you could do for spring and summer. However, now (of course) it is time for some Christmas cheer. This project is one that we did for Open Studio a couple of weeks ago. I thought I'd share with you the basic steps and supplies so that you can make one of your own at home.

As far as supplies go, you will need: an embroidery hoop, or two (I like how a pair of them looks together,) clear glass ornaments, crochet thread in silver and/or gold, acrylic paints, ribbon to hang the finished products from.

Paint the hoops in colors of your choice. I did my pair the same colors, but the girls at Open Studio did each a different color, which I thought was quite brilliant! You can also choose what colors to paint the insides of the ornaments with. Using at least one shimmery color is fun at the holidays. Mine were a combination of peacock blue, lavender and gold.( For painting the ornaments I used the same process as we did here with the votive candle holders. )

Once the painting is done, all that is left to do is attach the crochet thread to the hoops. I took the hoops apart and used one color (either the gold or silver) inside the hoop. Then, after it was placed together again, I used the second color to wrap around the outside. That way it gives the thread a bit of depth and interest. Finally, I attached the glass ornaments with a few pieces of the crochet thread, as well, and tied on some cloth ribbon to hang them from.

That, my friends, is pretty much all there is to it! It's a simple, cute, inexpensive holiday decoration for your home. Danielle (above) made hers at our Open Studio and was going to hang them on her (red!) front door. I think that I may hang mine (below) over a mirror in the hallway....

I have had this yellow thrifted frame for quite some time now. It was just awaiting the perfect treasure to hold. On my last trip to New York I found that treasure on the High Line. Pinhole photography with a message I needed to hear. And, I think I always will.

All that remains now is to find the perfect spot to place it in my house...

I spent a great deal of time this past weekend working on some new holiday-ish hair accessories too. It started with a custom ordered piece that got me in a shimmery-jewel-toned-ish sort of mood. I am excited to debut them at CREMA Christmas this year. For those of you in Nash: December 10th is the day. Open Studio Recap

Last night was our final session of Open Studio: Autumn. I'm so deeply thankful to my friend, Erin, for opening up her home and inviting all of her friends to come out and create. When I asked Erin which non-profit she wanted to donate to, she told me that she wanted to help me out with my trip to Africa in January, to work with Global Support Mission. I am so deeply humbled - and grateful - for her kindness!

Now for a look at the adorable wreaths! I can't pick just a few to share because they were ALL so beautiful. So, I think I'll show you some today...and then the rest on Friday. I hope that they inspire you with your holiday decorating too!

I am fairly certain that every single "new" purse I have gotten in the past year or so has been from a thrift store. This one is the latest. The cost? $1.99, which makes me so entirely happy.

Another happy thing? It goes perfectly with my brown striped scarf from Kenya.

Huge thanks to all of the fun girls who came out to Open Studio on Saturday. We drank pumpkin cider, ate freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, made pretty things AND helped out People Loving Nashville..all in one little afternoon. It was tons-o-fun..and here's a few photos from the day.

An End of the Year DIY

One of the best things I did at the end of last year was to sit down and create bunches of these Thank You cards. Not only did I have lovely handmade notes to send to all of those dear ones who gave me holiday gifts, I also had extras on hand to use throughout the year whenever the need arose.

It was also the perfect opportunity to recycle a fabulous little letter press calendar whose patterns and colors were way too fun to just throw away! I just added the fabric pieces - mine were samples that were already cut into squares - but, you could always pick up a pair of pinking shears to make any fabric scraps just as cute.

The finishing touch was stamping the word and gluing it all to a kraft paper card. Which, by the way, if you do not yet own letter stamps (and a black ink pad) I think they are a great investment. I use them for all sorts of things from place cards to labels at parties to...

..putting names on envelopes. They are one of my favorite tools, for sure.

Now, it's time for me to fill these cards with some notes to friends. Hope you enjoy making some of your own this season!

This Week

Which means that I am about to be a.) shopping for paint, papers, glue and all sorts of fun supplies and b.) thinking about what treats to make for Saturday's session at my house. Yes, there will be treats. Of COURSE there will be treats.

I have talked about her a lot, but you have never SEEN her because she is always the one behind the camera. Today I wanted you to meet the lovely and talented Tausha Fowler! It's been great fun to collaborate with her over the past few months on some things, including this amazing shoot we did for my hair accessory line.

She was gracious enough to come and run the photo booth at my birthday party last week - which was tons-o-fun - and I will share more of those photos with you over the next few days.

Thrifted Treasures

Actually, it's not exactly thrifted...it was rescued. From the neighbor's trash...and I am so, so glad it was! This metal tiered rack typically sits in my kitchen with wine glasses and dessert plates perched on it.

I discovered last week that it is the perfect display rack for my hair accessories. Versatility and it's YELLOW. What could be better?

Open Studio: the details

It is just about time for the Open Studio: Autumn sessions to begin, so I wanted to get all of the details to those of you who may be interested in signing up for one. There are three different dates and locations. The project will be the same at each. It is the holiday wreath (3 different designs - modern, woodland and square.) There will be different colored paint, fabrics and papers available so that you can customize them to fit your fancy :)

The cost of each session will be $20. If you choose to make the embroidery hoop design, and would like to do a pair, it will be $25 for both. All of the proceeds, beyond the cost of supplies will be going to a non-profit of the hostess's choice.

Okay, here's the info.!

1.) Location - Aimee's house in Franklin
Date/Time - Saturday, November 19th from 1 to 3pm.
Benefits - People Loving Nashville

2.) Location - Dani's house in East Nashville
Date/Time - Sunday, November 20th from 4 to 6pm

The Party is Over..

Yesterday is definitely at the top of the list of birthday memories. It all ended with a fabulous party here. You will soon see some of the amazing - and completely, perfectly ridiculous - photos from the photo booth we did. (thanks a million, Tausha!)

In other news, this happens to be my 200th blog post. I think this calls for a celebration. Cookies & milk, anyone?

Open Studio: The Project, Design #3

The final design for our Open Studio project: A colorful square (I love it!) wreath from Kelli. She used pretty papers, cut up into bright, happy leaves. We'll have lots of different patterns & colors for you to choose from too..and maybe even some old book pages too. Hmm, that could be fun!

Open Studio: The Project

As you already know, this year Open Studio is taking place in three different locations, will have three different hostesses and will benefit three different non-profits. Well, there is only one project, but (you guessed it)...three different designs.

We decided that we wanted to create holiday wreaths, but with a twist. Dani, Kelli and I have each come up with a different design to share with you. Today, I'm sharing my design. Look for Dani's tomorrow and Kelli's on Wednesday, right here on the blog.

My challenge for wreath design was to do something more on the "modern" side. I decided to use embroidery hoops, paint them a cool peacock blue and attach some sparkling crochet thread to them in criss-cross patterns. The finishing touch was to add some hand-painted glass ornaments and a pretty, thick ribbon for hanging.

I think they turned out so pretty! They are especially fun in a pair, too. If you choose to make this design at Open Studio you will have the option for creating two, as well. We'll also have different colors available for you to choose from, so that you can customized it to fit your home...or, to give away as the perfect holiday gift.

Tomorrow: Dani's design. Her challenge was to do something woodland-y..and, she nailed it. Come back tomorrow to see her adorable creation.

So, we did this photo shoot a little while back. It was getting dark, we were all a bit tired and...well, this just happened. Well, actually..okay, yes: Tausha encouraged it. We all, very willingly, obliged. I thought it was an appropriate (little dark and creepy, but still entirely playful & fun, of course) one to share with you all today.

Open Studio: East Nashville

Open Studio: Autumn will take place in East Nashville on Sunday, November 20th. I asked the hostess, Dani (pictured above, modeling some of my hair flower designs,) to tell us all a little bit about the non-profit that will be benefiting from the event. Here's what she had to say:

With our recent move to the east side we’ve seen how inviting and welcoming this
neighborhood can be. It seems that everyone we meet on this side of town takes a
great amount of pride and ownership in our little section of Nashville. Community
is essential part of life here. So when it came time to decide on a non-profit to work
with for our house (which we lovingly call The Eaterie) craft night, we thought it
would be best to choose an organization with it’s own vested interest in East Nash.

East Nashville Cooperative (ENCM) is a ministry focused on improving the health
and welfare of the residents of the East Nash community. Through their different
programs involving food and clothing, this organization is meeting the needs of this
neighborhood whether they are spiritual, educational, economic, mental, physical or
emotional.

These programs not only help immediate needs by providing emergency clothes
and food, they also educate participants on food and living through classes like
gardening and cooking. ENCM also partners with other agencies, local farms and
multiple faith communities in around East Nash to empower the wellbeing of the
community.

Thanks to Dani for opening her home to host an Open Studio event! Along with Dani, Erin (our other hostess,) Kelli and I are all working diligently on the designs for the project we will be creating together. I hope to have photos for you by the weekend. It's going to be so much fun!

Autumn Perfection

It was a most lovely weekend. The weather was glorious and I spent all day Saturday on the rolling, colored hills of a beautiful Nashville farm, decorating for a fall festival. There was a laughter-filled hayride at sunset, followed by live music, bonfires and s'mores underneath the bright, sparkling stars. Really, it could not have been much more perfect.

Sunday was quite lovely too. I spent most of that day sequestered in my art studio. Five new feathered headbands were created and I did something else I have not done in quite awhile: collaged. I've been used to working with fabric and felt lately, which I love dearly, but I must say: it was good to spend some time with paper again, too. It has always been a favorite medium of mine. Photos will be coming soon...after the finishing touches are added!

Adventures Await

Yesterday I booked a flight. To London. Because 1.) I have always wanted to go there...but, more importantly 2.) London is on the way to...Africa. The last time I was in Africa was January of 2009 and I can not tell you how excited (and ready) I am to go back.

Details are still being worked out, but I am hoping to do some work with a non-profit there, maybe some art and design type of stuff (yay!) and to spend some time in a Ugandan village that I fell in love with a few years ago.

So, from now until December, any purchases of my artwork and hair accessories will be going towards helping me help others..in Africa. Many exciting - and busy! - days ahead this fall. I am so, so thankful for the opportunities I have use my creative work to make a difference in the world. There is nothing more fulfilling than that for this girl.

Open Studio: My Favorite Part

My friend, Ryan, is one of the most inspiring people I know. His passion and vision for serving those in need in our city, and his boldness in not hesitating to ACT on those things, has constantly challenged me over this past year of serving with People Loving Nashville. The video above will give you a look at what I have the privilege of being a part of every single Monday night.

This year we have also expanded into some new territory. While PLN started out taking meals to those who are without a home, there is now also a group of us feeding those who are formerly homeless and currently trying to get back on their feet. They may have a roof over their heads, but there are still many, many needs. Sometimes the needs are overwhelming...But, every week we get to spend time entering their stories, listening to their hurt, sharing in their community and extending love, as best as we know how to. In the end, I know that it is those moments and conversations that will be remembered far more than what was served for dinner that night.

With new territory comes new expenses. So, this year I am dedicating the proceeds from the Open Studio I will be hosting (on Saturday, November 19th) to People Loving Nashville. I can assure you, from my experience firsthand, it will be money well spent and used to serve the community of Nashville in the most resourceful way possible.

Each of the other Open Studio hostesses will be donating the proceeds of their event to a non-profit of their choice, as well. I look forward to sharing those organizations with you in the next couple of weeks...because creating AND helping people are two of my most favorite things.

Headed out tonight with my intern, Kelli, to start purchasing supplies for our Open Studio project! Samples will be becoming as fast as we can craft them. Here are a few things on my list to purchase:

1. round pieces of metal

3. chalkboard paint

There will be many other things to gather, too, but this is where it will all begin. Lowe's, here we come. I'm so excited to start crafting..and to show YOU the results!

I was commissioned to create a couple of hair flowers in autumn tones recently...so, while I was at it, and the autumn colored scraps of fabric and felt were surrounding me, I created a couple of extra ones too.

New & Improved Open Studio

This week some plans are being laid in place for the Open Studio events that will be taking place next month. Last fall, if you remember, all of the events were held at my home studio in Franklin, TN. One of the new twists is: Three different locations!

One event will still be taking place at my home, but I also have two lovely co-hostesses that are opening up their homes around Nashville for the other events. I already introduced you to Erin a little while ago and now I want you to meet Dani. She recently moved into a new place over in East Nashville and I'm super excited that she has agreed to open it up to all of us for some creating this fall!

If she looks a bit familiar to you it may be because she also was one of the fabulous models for my headbands and hair flowers on the shoot we did with Tausha Fowler recently. She has a fun, inspiring blog of her own, too, that you can check out right here.

Erin, Dani and I met this week and began discussing project ideas for the Open Studios. We will be working on some samples to show you in the next couple of weeks. I will tell you this: It's a holiday-ish decor piece that each of you will be able to adapt to your own individual style. One of my favorite parts of Open Studio is seeing just that: how everyone adds their own creative spin to whatever the basic project may be. I can't wait to see what you all will come up with this time!

Each location will be doing the same project, just on different days. So, you will be able to pick one closest to your home to go to and join in on the fun. And, for those of you not located in the Nashville area - we will be sure to share lots of photos and creative tips with you, so that you can create something similar in your own home.

Here are my newest vintage fabrics, purchased on my trip to the Northeast. I can't wait to use them in some of my hair flower designs. Speaking of which, I have a few to finish working on....all in very autumnal-ish colors. They are making me very happy just looking at them. I think their new owners will be quite happy wearing them, as well!

When we did this fun photo shoot a little while back I promised to let you know when my friend, Tianna, launched her site. So, I am keeping my word. Check out her beautiful portfolio right here.

I had the privilege of experiencing Tianna's artistry firsthand when we collaborated on The Craft Party shoot. She did an absolutely incredible job with my (and photographer, Jen McDonald's) hair and make up that day.

Tianna and I also worked together on this music video for the talented Melissa Fuller. I did the set styling and Tianna rocked the 1960's style hair and make up. Such a brilliant job!

Inspiring and Unexpected

One of my favorite things I got to do on this most recent trip to New York was to spend a Saturday afternoon gallery hopping in the Chelsea area. I love the feel of the smaller, intimate galleries.. the kind of places where you are very likely to happen upon the artists themselves standing and talking freely about their work and inspiration to anyone who happens along.

When I walked into the Cue Art Foundation and saw the work of The Oakes Twins I was immediately a fan. Their drawings and painting are amazing and inspiring, but what caught my eye most of all was the unexpected:

Sculptures made entirely out of...pipe cleaners. As an artist who loves and deeply appreciates texture, I was completely in awe of how they had taken such ordinary (and overlooked) common "craftsy" objects and turned them into unique, beautiful sculptures.

So, so inspiring! The next wedding I style just very well may be decorated completely with... pipe cleaners. Who knew they could be so stunning?

So, I was in Pennsylvania last week. Which means that I (most definitely) went to my favorite thrift store. And, I (most definitely) bought some things. Things like cornflower blue lace...

Taking Off

About to get on a plane and head up to the Northeast for a few days. I am looking forward to resting, spending some time in Pennsylvania with family and meeting up with friends for a long weekend in New York. Oh, AND...I get to see these guys. Excited doesn't even begin to describe it.

Thrifted Treasures

Since it's a travel week for me, I thought this treasure would be quite appropriate. It actually will not be accompanying me THIS time ( I am traveling light, with just a shoulder bag carry-on)..there will be a day when it shall be taken. No doubt.

For now, it sits near the bottom of my bed, under my window, and makes me smile. Pretty much every single day.

Busy & Smiling

Glass has been painted, wood has been drilled, fabric has been gathered, rope (and twine! so fun!) has been dyed, flowers ordered, ribbons tied...and, tonight: the car will be packed.

Styling for the wedding begins tomorrow afternoon. I will be surround by pretty colors and sparkling candles for the next couple of days.... and will be back on Monday to tell you all about it.

Thrifted Treasures

The best place to shop for wedding decorations? In my opinion? Goodwill. On half price day. It is quite possible that the line Kelli and I waited in that day was THE longest one on earth, HOWEVER: it was totally worth it when our cart - stuffed full of clear glass votives and jars - rang up to (are you ready?) $13.00. How can you beat that?

And, here's what we did with them: dripped and swirled peacock blue, apple green, purple and sparkling gold acrylic paint into them. It's so much fun to do - and so, so easy. We first got the idea from this blog. Clever, huh?

All of our pretty, painted Thrifted Treasures are ready to make their debut this coming weekend at the wedding. I have no doubt they will be well-received.

Open Studio Update

Last fall I began hosting an event called "Open Studio." It began last September, with a fun-filled hair flower making session and continued for two more sessions, one a month...and on again, the same way, in the spring. After the spring sessions I felt like it was time for a "new and improved" version of the same event. I had some creative, trusted friends give me some feedback on it, and we can came up with (what I think is!) a great plan.

So, here's one of the changes: Open Studio Hostesses. Instead of just hosting all of the sessions at my home studio, I am collaborating with some other fun, innovative ladies who will be hosting sessions in their own homes. These will take place in a couple of different areas of town. There will be two to three different events, all of them taking place (most likely) in November - just in time for you to create some unique, handmade Christmas gifts!

My first confirmed hostess is the lovely Erin Sparks, pictured above. I've known this dear girl for over a decade and had the privilege of decorating for her wedding several years back. More recently, too, I was able to help her restyle the living room in her house, along with creating some custom artwork to go on the walls. Now, we get to create together, again, and dream up some fun projects for Open Studio - and I can't wait!

I will let you know more details as soon as they are all established - but, if you think you may be interested in attending a session this fall, you can go ahead and let me know. I'll be glad to add your name to my mailing list, so that you don't miss out on a single thing!

Details, Details

I am a huge fan of little details. Things like pretty, delicious snack trays on creative project work days. I put together a little one for our wedding project day this Saturday. In that process I discovered a new love: sea salt and cracked pepper pretzels. Trust me on this: get some. Now.

Our work day was quite productive! Several projects were tackled. One of them you will hear about on Tuesday because it involved some Thrifted Treasures. It's a super fun and easy DIY project that I plan to do again and again, with all different, crazy, bright colors.

Another project we worked on involved that sisal rope that we dyed purple the other night. It is now attached to the weathered wood, that I told you about, and ready to be suspended from the ceiling at the wedding site. After that, my favorite part: adding the details. Sparkling, colorful, personal details.

Less than a week til the Big Day..and I am ready! Well, actually there are still lots of things to put into place, but I am ready (and super excited!) to see all of the final results of the past couple of months worth of work. It is well worth all of the effort. Can't wait to share the beauty with you TOO.

Madrid + Malaga

One of my favorite afternoons spent in Madrid was the one when we visited this art museum. The colors and shapes I used in this design remind me of some of the beautifully framed pieces on the walls. They also remind me of the bright, stylish shoes in the trendy boutiques we visited in the city. It was such a wonderful day...one of my favorite days in life, so far. Which may be why I, myself, chose to model the "Madrid" headband.

I actually only drove through the city of Malaga, but I remember the pretty blue water and the fresh breeze blowing through the car window. It was lovely - just like my dear friend (and intern) Kelli, who modeled its namesake so very well!

All four headbands (Segovia, Granada, Madrid and Malaga) are currently for sale. If you are interested in purchasing any of them, just drop me a line.

Now, I think it may be time for me to plan another trip back to Spain...I have no doubt it would inspire me all over again!

Segovia and Granada

So, you had a glimpse of the Segovia headband already, earlier today. And, now, here is Granada.

They are named after two beautiful cities I visited in Spain. Cities with deep burnt orange colored rooftops, ancient castles with brown, stone walls and intricate, wrought iron balconies draped with pretty, overflowing flower pots.

My first visit to each of these places also happened to be in autumn...which is another reason why the names seem so very appropriate for these pieces.

I hope your holiday weekend is just lovely! Mine is going to be FULL of creating. There is a custom hair accessory that I need to make, some hair flowers to package and deliver and, then, there's this "little" wedding I've been working on too...lots and lots of things to put together for that upcoming event.

Last night Kelli and I went out and bought plenty of supplies for all of our DIY wedding projects...we are even going to attempt using some dye. This is something that I have not attempted much. Well, actually, I have not attempted it at all. To be honest, I am simultaneously frightened and excited about the whole entire concept. I will keep you posted..fingers crossed for beaUUUtiful results!!

I may have mentioned this before, but: I LOVVVEEE thrifted afghans! I was beyond excited to find two new ones for the photo shoot. And, of course, I still threw in my other favorite (the green one with purple, yellow and red stripes..) with them.

Another things I LOVVVEEE? These two photos that Tausha took of our Candy Picnic. Oh, and yes, that IS a scrabble board with gummi alphabet letters on it. It most certainly is. They happen to be quite delicious, especially with sparkling apple juice on the side. So I hear....

Just wanted to extend a huge "Thank You!!" to all of the ladies who helped make the photo shoot successful. Hair stylist Amie Yoder (from Tressed Up) and make up artist, Casey Taylor both did such an amazing job! They worked so very hard, and all in a small (but, very well air-conditioned, thankfully!) farm office. Getting five girls ready for a shoot is quite a task and they did it all very gracefully, and with smiles and laughter too. You'll see more of the final results of their hard work tomorrow, too. I promise.

Also, I am so thankful for the lovely, lovely ladies - and dear friends - who agreed to spend their entire Saturday afternoon (and early evening) modeling my hair accessories. Claire, Kendra, Dani and my fabulous intern, Kelli: you are all THE best.

In addition to her hard work helping me carry props and hair accessories up hills and over pastures on Saturday, Kelli also helped me put together these little "day of the shoot" survival goodie bags. With any sort of a shoot like this there is always that hurry-up-stand-around-and-wait sort of time. So, I wanted to make sure that each of the girls had some refreshments to hold them over while they awaited their time in front of the camera.

We included some trail mix, mints, clementines, pretty glass bottles of spring water and (just for fun) some sparkling bangles. Little details like this always make my heart super happy. So much fun to put together!

Coming up tomorrow: I will show you the results of Amie and Casey's hard work..and the new headband and hair flower designs! Also, some of the Thrifted Treasures that I used to style the shoot. Lots and lots of COLOR. But, then again, what else would you expect from me? Right? Til then....

Just had to share a quick look at Saturday's photo shoot with you today! More will be coming tomorrow, but just could.not.wait....We had the most beautiful day here in TN and the farm where we were was absolutely gorgeous!

We even decided, spontaneously, to pull in one of the residents into the picture with lovely Claire, who is wearing one of my new headband designs. I snapped this fun shot with my phone before the moment passed. So, so pretty!

Tausha did a beautiful job with the photos..have lots more to share with you in the week ahead!

Day Off

It has been quite a busy summer! Nights and weekends have been filled with creative work, plus I am still working the day job all.week.long. With all of that going on, I decided I probably needed to take an official day OFF. Saturday is the big photo shoot for all of the new hair accessories, but tomorrow? Ahhh, tomorrow. There will be no office, no to-do lists, no shopping and searching for wedding decorations. There WILL be these delightful things: a book, my favorite coffee shop, some vintage shopping, maybe an afternoon movie and.. rest. Sweet rest.

I am looking forward to being refreshed and ready to go for Saturday's shoot. Some lovely dears are coming to model my pieces and I am so excited about collaborating with this talented lady! On Monday I will be back with a full update on how it all goes. Can't wait to show you all of the new, pretty, autumn-ish things...

Hello everybody! Kelli here. Aimee and I are definitely kindred spirits when it comes to thrifting. She is often the first person I show off my "new" treasures to, so when she asked me to be her guest on Thrifted Treasure Tuesday, I was thrilled!

My head immediately started swimming with some of the items I've picked up over time, but my most recent purchase seemed most appropriate for the occasion. Though these cute glasses have only lived with me a short time, the cheery apple, pear and orange on each one makes me smile every time. I think the apple makes me the happiest... perhaps it reminds me of apple harvest season which is right around the corner... Helloooo, Autumn!

The Lovely Weekend

Our meeting on Saturday was just perfect. Details are being put in place and inspiration is flowing for next weekend's photo shoot. And the apple, bacon and brie crepe was just delicious, I must say.

After that Kelli and I took a trip to one of my favorite stores to look at the pretty fabrics and trims. She found some fun buttons for her necklace creations (which you will all see soon!) and I found some elegant ribbons to hang lanterns on for the wedding next month.

Since the Goodwill was so close by, well..of course. Of course, we went. It afforded us a few colorful, playful props for the shoot next week. Kelli picked up some treasures, too, that I will let her share with you in the coming weeks. In fact, THIS Tuesday's Thrifted Treasures will actually be her first guest post. So, be sure to look for it!

There are still a few more headbands to create and hair flowers waiting to be glued together in my studio - So, off I go to finish those up!

1 Week + (Less than!) 1 Month

Already less than a month left 'til the wedding I am styling. I have been quite busy collecting pretty lanterns, ordering flowers and finalizing design plans. Now, the best part is about to begin: turning all of the dreams and sketches into reality. There will be lots of work nights (and days) in the next thirty days. I will be sure to give you a look at all of the pretty things we will be assembling.

Also, in the works: a photo shoot for my newly designed hair accessories. That will take place in just one short week. Kelli and I are meeting with this lovely lady tomorrow to discuss all of the details, over delicious crepes. Quite excited about this creative collaboration...and the crepes too!

Oh, and this weekend is also my tattoo-versary. I celebrated today with bubble tea.

So much happening. So many colors, patterns and beautiful things swirling around in my creative studio.... I am one happy, happy girl.

Thrifted Treasures

As you know, one of my summer projects has been working on my inventory of new hair accessories. Which, of course, leads to the need for PACKAGING. Pretty packaging is one of my favorite things in the whole, entire world. So, I happen to think it's quite important.

I love packaging my headbands on vintage book covers. This "How and Why" one with my "Circus" headband was one of my favorite finds while I was creating my last headband collection.

So, you can imagine my excitement when I found THIS one this past Saturday! Hooray!

And, then I found THESE amazing covers as well. I think they will be perfect for my geometric headband collection.

A most successful thrifting (and antique store shopping!) weekend it was.
